Environmental data sharing top priority, says envoy

Speaking at a programme organized by the Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists today, Nepal’s Ambassador to China Leela Mani Paudyal stressed on data sharing, joint research and capacity building with regard to environmental issues between Nepal and China. Paudyal said sharing of data with regard to the environment would be his first priority in the environment sector.

Currently, there are no classified data on rivers, forests, climate change, carbon emission, pollution, and water flow in Nepal. Paudyal said having comprehensive environment data was vital in dealing with climate change, pollution, and various environmental issues. He also said that data sharing between the countries would strengthen research.

COP 22: Nepal to receive $2.9 million from Green Climate Fund

Nepal is set to receive $2.9 million (Rs 29 crore) from the Green Climate Fund to help the country prepare its national Adaptation plan. The news comes as 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 22) to the UNFCCC wraps up in Marrakesh, Morocco later today. Nepal’s Minister for Population and Environment Jayadev Joshi, said “This conference was very important for Nepal as we look to implement the Paris. We are happy to share with you that Nepal will receive $ 2.9 million from the Green Climate fund.”

NOC to supply Euro IV standard petro products from mid-2017

Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) is likely to supply Euro IV standard petrol and diesel in the domestic market from the middle of next year as its sole fuel supplier, the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), is shifting to production and distribution of Euro IV emission standard petrol and diesel in India from April 1, 2017.

Air Quality monitoring stations begin operation

Since reviving air quality monitoring in the Valley four months ago, the Department of Environment has started operating three air quality monitoring stations here and in Dhulikhel. According to the department, the three stations in Ratnapark, Pulchowk and Dhulikhel began air quality monitoring since last week. They have been forwarding the data to the central server, which automatically uploads air pollution data to the government’s website (www.pollution.gov.np).

Experts stress on providing clean cooking solution for all

Experts have underlined the need of increasing the use of clean and sustainable energy while reducing the use of traditional sources of fuel for improving people’s health, environment conservation and securing gender inclusion.

Speaking in the National Forum for Dissemination of Investment Prospectus for Clean Cooking Solutions in Nepal, organised by the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) with Nepal Alliance for Clean Cookstoves here today, the experts suggested that climate change effects could not be minimised and climate change adaptation, livelihood improvement and health enhancement not achieved unless the dependency on organic fuel sources is minimised.

EDC-HRC Agreement

In a recent COP 22, Nepal committed to accelerate the adaptation plan through national agendas. In a program organized by Ministry of Environment Nepal, ICIMOD and ACT where the government officials and experts recommended the government to implement NAP and Mr. JayDev Joshi, minister of Environment also showed interest and urgent requirement for NAP implementation and mentioned that the program will certainly reduce the impacts of climate change in future and request the experts to extensively incorporate the issues of poverty and livelihood through capacity development of poor people.

Secretary of ministry stated that Nepal emits very low amount of CO2 and hence should only focus in climate change adaptation activities. Likewise, the NAP implementation support committement were also shown by the National Planning Commission representative Mr. Prabhu Budhathoki and Mr. Bimal Regmi, a specialist from ICIMOD.

Nepal bags adaptation award

Finish Government recently awarded the project titled “Rural Water Management Project” which is being implemented by the Nepal Government in very remote areas of the nation where it has been helping the pro-poor people to adapt in climate change and also uplifting them from poverty. The project has succeeded to make a positive impact in those areas by conserving the water sources, developing small scale irrigation, developing the micro hydro and so on.

As per the Ram Krishna Sapkota, Director General of DOLIDAR, the project has supported women groups, indigenous and marginalized communities and supported them in income generating activities as well. The project is being implemented in eight districts of the far-western region of Nepal i.e. Bajhang, Bajura, Accham, Doti, Dadeldhura, Baitadi, Darchula and kailali and Humla and Dailkeh of Mid western region also.
