Philippines, developing countries need to spend $300B a year by 2030 to adapt to climate change
The Philippines and other developing countries must spend $28 billion a year by 2030 to adapt to climate change. These are huge sums by any standard, wrote Lisa Doughtery-Choux for the World Resources Institute on April 23.
“As global temperatures climb, so do the costs of adapting to a warmer world. Severe weather events are becoming more frequent, creating major budget pressures for national governments, especially those in the developing world,” Choux warned.

Gov’t data lack delays cleaner energy shift
The Philippines government has yet to take the first step in fully adopting renewable energy technologies because these remain expensive and data regarding the country’s power requirements remain insufficient.
This was revealed by Mary Ann Lucille L. Sering, vice-chair of the Climate Change Commission (CCC) during a sit-down interview with BusinessWorld editors on Wednesday.

Philippines gets P147M funding for climate change hub
Climate-vulnerable nations will soon share a climate change knowledge and training center that will soon rise at the Clark Green City in Pampanga. Thanks to the German government for the 3 million euros (P147 million) fund dedicated for the training facility.
Dubbed the South-South Center of Excellence for Climate Information and Services will benefit the 20 most vulnerable nations to climate change, which form the Climate Vulnerable Forum (VCF), according to Climate Change Sec. Lucille Sering, who also chairs the VCF until the next election in mid-2016.

The Philippines has been cited as a worldwide leader in renewable electricity share and emissions per person in the Green Innovation Index (International Edition) of Next 10, a California-based non-partisan organization that advocates sustainable economic growth.

Solar Philippines, Citicore Power roll out 250-MW joint venture
Citicore Power and Solar Philippines on Wednesday formally sealed their joint-venture to put up at least a 250-megawatt (MW) solar power facility in 2016.
Leandro Leviste, Solar Philippines chief executive officer (CEO), said the 50-50 partnership will unlock synergies between the two companies to build the largest solar portfolio in Southeast Asia.
The partnership, Leviste added, has started with its first project–the 60-MW solar facility in Calatagan, Batangas, where construction has begun and is expected to be completed in November this year.

DENR backs UN call for low carbon, resource-efficient economy The Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Thursday backed a United Nations report calling for resource efficiency among Asia-Pacific countries.
The agency noted the United Nations Environment Program report can be a guide for governments and policymakers in the transition to low-carbon and resource-efficient economy.
“These information are relevant for the Philippines and other governments across the region in order to make the most informed decisions that best serve our people,” said environment secretary Ramon Paje.
