Govt establishing renewable energy trust fund
The National Renewable Energy Board, an agency under the Energy Department, said it will establish a trust fund this year to support more clean energy projects.
NREB chairman Pete Maniego said the renewable energy trust fund was among the priorities that the board would pursue this to fully realize the benefits of Republic Act No. 9513, or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.
The law calls for the creation of the renewable energy trust fund to enhance the development and greater utilization of renewable energy. It shall be administered by the department as a special account in any of the government financial institutions that shall be exclusively used to finance the research, development, demonstration and promotion of the widespread and productive use of RE systems for power and non-power applications.

22 hydro projects awarded by DOE in Davao Region
The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded service contracts to 22 hydro power projects in Davao Region with a total potential capacity of about 256.35 megawatts (MW).
The projects were divided by DOE into pre-development service contract and development service contract.
The pre-development service contracts, according to DOE Mindanao senior science research specialist, Engr. Rolando J. Fara-on, “will allow the companies to begin complying the needed required documents, certificates, endorsements, and conducting their feasibility studies.”

14 more renewable energy projects endorsed for tariff incentive
More renewable energy projects have been endorsed for tariff incentives.
According to the Department of Energy (DOE), five biomass, three hydro, two solar and four wind projects with a combined capacity of 304.51 megawatts have been granted certificates of endorsement (COE).
Should they pass muster with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC), the 14 projects would qualify for feed-in-tariff (FIT), a guarantee that their developers can recover their costs plus a margin for the next 20 years.

2015: Banner year for PHL renewable energy
RENEWABLE energy (RE) will enjoy a banner year in 2015. This was the optimistic outlook made by a panel of experts in the recent forum titled Celebrating Renewable Energy Success in the Philippines and Paving the Way Forward held at a hotel in Makati City.
Markus Dietrich, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) Project Development Program for Renewable Energies in Southeast Asia coordinator, said the Philippines has come a long way in the development of RE.
Dietrich said it is highlighted by the activation of the solar-powered roof of the Henry Sy-led SM North mall in the third quarter of 2014. It is one of the largest installations in the world.

Consumers to start paying renewable energy fees in Feb
THE FEED-IN-TARIFF (FIT) scheme that provides incentives to renewable energy (RE) development projects is set to be in motion from this month onwards.
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has authorized the inclusion of the line item called FIT-Allowance or FIT-All in the billing of power consumers, executive director Francis Saturnino Juan said via text message.
The Department of Energy has so far endorsed 14 RE projects to regulators for accreditation for fixed generation rates which will be paid by power consumers through a fund consisting of FIT-All collections by distribution utilities such as Meralco. The fund will be managed by National Transmission Corp. or Transco.

DOE ‘failed’ in renewable energy goal
THE Department of Energy (DOE) admitted it has only achieved 10 percent of the government’s renewable energy sufficiency goal seven years after the Renewable Energy Act (Republic Act 9593) was passed into law.
After learning about the matter, Rep. Francisco Ashley Acedillo (Magdalo Party-list) said he plans to sponsor a resolution directing the House Committee on Energy to conduct an inquiry on the status of renewable energy projects in the country.

Next step for Philippines and world: Deciding CO2 cuts for Paris Pact
In Lima last month, over-worked and desperate delegates to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change conference heaved a collective sigh – humanity had taken a huge step backward from the precipice of climate doom.
Two hard fought goals made the timely retreat possible. The first was an outline text that will be fleshed out before next December when delegates meet to finalize the 2015 Paris agreement. Given the complex options and divergent positions involved, this process will be daunting.

Renewable energy as the future of property development in the Philippines
AS demand for power and energy prices continue to surge, property developers and other industry players are searching for more ways to help promote a more efficient way of sustaining the daily affairs of the Filipino household.
With developers realizing the role that they play in promoting renewable energy (RE) technologies as more viable, long-term solutions to the demands of today’s real-estate market, we can surely expect the emergence of future developments anchored on RE technologies as more players contend with this shift.
