Building livelihoods for people in response to climate change

International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) has recently coordinated with People’s Committee of Tra Vinh Province and Ben Tre province to hold a conference technically launching the project “Adaptation in the Mekong Delta” in these two provinces.

The conference focuses on discussing solutions on enhancing the livelihoods for poor farm households. As reported, total investment of the project sponsored by IFAD is 1,034 billion VND implemented from 2014 to 2020. The project will be implemented in the area of 30 communes of 8 districts of Ben Tre province and 30 communes of 7 districts of Tra Vinh province.

The overall objective of the project is to build sustainable livelihoods for the poor in rural areas in changing environmental condition; improve the adaptation capacity of community to enhance the response to climate change.

Da Nang: The youth communicating on climate change

Climate Change Communication Camp 2014 recently took place in Da Nang City. The camp has found 20 communication products on the subject of climate change (CC), out of 9 plans implemented by 60 young talents.

This is the first model of communication camp for the youth in Vietnam, which was co-organized by Redraw The Line Campaign and the 350.org Global Movement on Climate Change in Vietnam (also known as the 350 org. movement Vietnam) with the aim to improve skills and develop ideas for the youth to create media products on climate change.

Integrating climate change and disaster mitigation into economic – social development

The program “Community-based Response to Climate Change”, Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade have recently coordinated with non-governmental organizations to hold a conference on “Integrating climate change and disaster mitigation into economic-social development plan and sectoral plan” in Tien Giang province.

The conference aims to strengthen the understanding of the planning process of Vietnam, the participants, mechanisms and resources for the implementation of the plan; raise awareness of the team members of climate change media group about the need to integrate these elements to respond to climate change and mitigate disaster risk into economic-social development plan at the sectoral and local level. Thence, agree on a roadmap to expand this work.

People’s Climate Mobilization

Date: 22/09/2014

The program namely “People Climate Mobilization” will be held in Hanoi, Da Nang and Can Tho on 20th September and in Ho Chi Minh City on 21st September. This is one of the main activities of the climate change global campaign 350.org mobilized in Vietnam.

The program’s activities include: The program’s people played as “statue people” with their black-painted body, wearing gas-mask, holding slogan for minimizing coal using and standing at public locations to attract attention of residences and tourists. The participants will also be encouraged to take photos with the statue people and post on social network as Facebook. Besides the brochures contained information of coal and relationship between coal and climate change shall be distributed to the participants.

Vietnam starts building carbon market

In the morning of the 19th September, the Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate change under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment organized a consultation workshop for developing the project “Preparation for developing the carbon market in Vietnam” (PMR).

The project PMR has been proposed by Vietnam and sponsored by the World Bank (WB) and the Asia Development Bank (ADB). The project aims to strengthen capacity in developing and implementing policies and tools for developing the carbon market in Vietnam, focusing on the climate change mitigation policies and financial tools. At the same time, the “Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions” (NAMA) will be implemented to prepare for issuing carbon credit in the two sectors of steel production managed by Ministry of Commerce and Trade and solid waste management managed by Ministry of Construction in order to participate actively in the global carbon market.
