IFAD funds Ben Tre sustainable rural development project

At the end of May, 2014 , the project entitled “Mekong Delta Sustainable Rural Development and Climate Change ” will start in Ben Tre with a total capital of nearly US$ 25 million. The project is a follow-up to a project supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which has developed businesses in Ben Tre’s poor rural areas from May 2008, and is scheduled to end in June 2014.

Vietnam Climate Innovation Centre established

As planned, the Vietnam Innovative Climate Center (CIC) will be established and put into operation in the second half of 2014. CIC Vietnam is sponsored by the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) and Australia’s Department of Foreign and Trade (ADFT).
The Vietnam CIC will provide a range of venture acceleration, market development and technology commercialization services to enable domestic entrepreneurs and start-ups to pro-actively and profitably develop innovative climate technology (clean tech) solutions that meet local needs.

Effectiveness of “co-management” model in Soc Trang province

Recently, Soc Trang provincial People’s Committee has been working with the evaluation team of project “Community based climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta”. This project is funded by the Australian Agency for International Development.
The “co-management” model has been established in a number of coastal localities in the Soc Trang. It help to guarantee economic life of local people in coastal areas, protect and develop forest in a sustainable way before the impact of climate change.

Policies and legislation on climate change need to be specified

At the recent conference on the implementation of policies and legislation on coping with climate change in Vietnam, the delegates assumed that policies and legislation on coping with climate change should be more specific.
Currently, there are more than 300 different documents about responding to climate change, which proves the special concern of the Party and State on this issue. However, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha emphasized that, although the policies are promptly and synchronously issued, they are not specific, only aiming at orientation. In addition, the majority of socio-eco development planning of sectors, fields, localities has not been supplemented with climate change factor, etc.

The launch of Adaptation Project to Climate Change in Tra Vinh, Ben Tre

Adaptation project to climate change in the Mekong River delta has been launched in Tra Vinh and Ben Tre. With a total capital of 49.3 million USD, this project consists of three components including: Building the capacity of adaptation, investing in sustainable livelihood and project management. Accordingly, there are 60 communes in Ben Tre and Tra Vinh implementing this project from now to 2020.
The project aims to build the capacity of community, organizations, especially the poor in the Mekong Delta in order to better adapt to climate change.

Mekong Delta promotes ecosystem-based climate change adaptation

A project on enhancing ecosystem-based climate change adaptation in the Mekong Delta region was discussed by Vietnamese and foreign scientists at a workshop held in Can Tho city on May 27.
The event was jointly organised by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Steering Committee for the Southwestern Region.
Aided by German’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety, the 2014-2018 project aims to improve the region’s resistance to climate change through restoring flood prevention and regulation ability in Dong Thap Muoi and Long Xuyen Quadrangle areas.
Under the project, functioning ecosystems in coastal areas can provide helpful services to support farm production and aquaculture activities in salt water zones, as well as help locals to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
