Quang Nam: Developing strategy of land use and climate change interactions

Institute for Technology and Resources Management in the Tropics and Subtropics (ITT), Cologne University of Applied Sciences (Germany) and Vietnam Academy for Water Resources collaborating with People’s Committee of Quang Nam province held a workshop “Land Use and Climate Change Interactions in the Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin” (LUCCI).
LUCCI project started in July 2010 and is set to last for 5 years. The project site covers an area of more than 10,300 kilometer square ranging from 0 meter at sea level to an altitude of 2,598 meter at the border of Vietnam – Laos.
At the workshop, participating experts presented investigation process, collected data, and research experience at Vu Gia – Thu Bon river basin (including Quang Nam and Da Nang provinces). They also emphasized the importance of integrated models in mitigating climate change impacts in the course of socio-economic development and environmental protection.

2. Helping rural communities to actively respond to climate change

On April 8, in Hanoi, Vietnam and Lao Adventist Development and Relief Agencies (ADRA) co- organized a workshop to share experiences and solutions to adapt to climate change. This event is in the framework of the South East Asia: Regional Environmental Adaptation to Climate Change Training and Implementation Project (SEA: REACTI).
the workshop dealt with social responsibility of the private sector to climate change, climate-smart agriculture. That will help managers to find out ways to help people in rural areas have adequate tools in adapting to climate change.

3. Operational Framework for Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change for Vietnam – A Policy Supporting Document unveils

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) has introduced a policy supporting document “Operational framework for Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to climate change for Vietnam” and encouraged the adoption of the framework nationwide.
Since 2010, the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) has supported the development of an operational framework for Ecosystem-based Adaptation to climate change in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. The policy supporting document is presented to governmental organizations, institutes, non-governmental organizations and other relevant agencies in 63 provinces throughout the country.

4. Lai Chau, Quang Ngai province to pilot National strategy on climate change

Prime Minister has approved the Project of Strengthening National Capacities to Respond to Climate Change in Vietnam funded by United Nations Development Programmer (UNDP).
Accordingly, the project is implemented within 48 months. The total cost of the project is over 4.7 million USD, 4.6 million USD of which is grant aid. The objectives of the project is to raise awareness and improve institutional and technical capacities of cadres in some agencies, departments and localities for the efficient implementation of National Strategy on Climate Change and Resolution No. 24-NQ/TW dated March 6, 2013 by the 7th session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam on active response to climate change, strengthening natural resources management and environmental protection.
Quang Ngai and Lai Chau provinces are selected to pilot the project.
