Albay cited by IPCC for ‘leading practices’ in climate change adaptation
Albay Province, known for its A-grade disaster-preparedness portfolio, has been cited in a draft Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report as one of the areas where the “leading practices” of climate change adaptation is being practiced.
During the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda and previous storms, Albay Province proved that its provincial disaster prevention plans are effective and lifesaving.
“Local governments play an important role in adaptation because they directly communicate with affected communities. For the past several years, leading practices have begun in New York City, Mexico City, Toronto, Albay Province in the Philippines, and elsewhere,” the final draft of the “Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability” report said.

Climate change study
The World Wide Fund for Nature and industry partners have come out with a study on the priority actions and climate protection measures to achieve a low-carbon feature for the Philippines.
A joint study by WWF and the Climate Commission said titled “Building Momentum for Low Carbon Development” introduces a series of forward-looking plans that integrate development objectives with climate change mitigation strategies.
“It aims to set forth a stage-by-stage pathway whereby the Philippines can eventually transition from an economy that is heavily dependent on fossil-fuels to one that uses 100-percent renewable energy,” WWF Philippines vice chairman and chief executive Jose Ma. Lorenzo Tan said.

Philippine GHG emission growth likely to accelerate
The contribution of the Philippines to global warming is only a drop in the bucket of the world’s total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but that drop may get bigger in the future.
“Though it currently contributes less than 0.35 percent of global GHG emissions, its share will spike due to economic and population growth coupled with rapid urbanization,” the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Philippines said on Friday.
“Climate change mitigation reducing country emissions is critical because Asian economies are in full swing,” WWF-Philippines Project Manager Philline Donggay said in a news release.
