Rangsit University organized a seminar “Let’s create low carbon society – reduce global warming”

(5 October 2013)

On 5 October 2013, the department of Environmental Engineering, Rangsit University, hosted a seminar “Let’s create low carbon society – reduce global warming” at the Faculty of Engineering, Rangsit University. The seminar was moderated by Dr.Charoenwit Hankaew. Key speakers consisted of the deputy director of the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Mr.Sakol Tinakul, and the department’s expert, Ms.Savitri Srisuk. The seminar called for all sectors participation in reducing CO2 emission through energy saving, using green-label products, 3Rs, increasing green space, behavioral change, etc.

Samui Islands to be Low Carbon Model Town and Clean Energy Islands

(10-13 October 2013)

Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, Ministry of Energy, organized a 3 days training workshop on “Energy savings and renewable energy for low carbon city” at Al’s Laemson resort, Samui Island. The workshop aimed to disseminate knowledge on development approaches toward low carbon city. Therefore it would increase public understandings and contributions to re-create Samui as a low carbon and clean energy islands. This capacity buildings corresponded with the APEC Low Carbon Model Town Project (LCMT) – Feasibility study for Samui Island. Also, it acts in accordance with the Thailand 20-Year Energy Efficiency Development Plant (2011 – 2030) which encourage the idea and realization of low-carbon social and economic development.

Rayong Province to be the pilot project for “Eco-industrial and low carbon city”

(15 October 2013)

The meeting on 15 October of the national “Eastern Seaboard Development Committee” at the Government house, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Mister of Commerce – Mr.Niwatthumrong Boonsongpaisarn, approved in principal to comprehensively resolve problems in Map Ta Phut (The site of Thailand’s largest industrial park). In addition, the meeting also approved in principal a memorandum of cooperation in the project “Development of the eco-industrial and low carbon city” which selects Rayong province as the pilot project site. Preparation of roadmap

was assigned to The Ministry of Industry, the Federation of Thai industries, Offices of the National Economics and Social Development Board, and other relevant ministries. Project management committee will be subsequently established by this workforce to oversee the action plan.

Thai experts participated in the international symposium “From Visioning to Implementation of Low-Carbon Transport in Asia”

(16-17 October 2013)

Thai experts on low carbon development of urban transport and inter-regional transport joined the international symposium “From Visioning to Implementation of Low-Carbon Transport in Asia”. This symposium is aimed at discussing how to design long-term measures to develop low-carbon transport systems in Asia in a leap-frog manner and in a backcasting way, decoupling economic growth with CO2 emission increase. The symposium was held on 16-17 October 2013 at Nihon University and United Nations University. Speakers include Prof. Wiroj Rujopakarn, Dr. Varameth Vichiensan, Dr. Paramet Luathep, Dr. Thaned Satiennam, Dr. Nuwong Chollacoop, Dr. Sittha Jaensirisak and Dr. Poon Thiengburanathum. Seminar on “Leadership in Eco-Industrial Town Development”

(28-29 October 2013)

The Federation of Thai Industries organized a seminar entitled “Leadership in Eco-Industrial Town Development” during 28 – 29 October 2013 at the Convention and Exhibition Centre BITEC, Bangkok. The seminar aims to promote and support the development of the Thai industry toward eco-industry. It provides platforms for knowledge and technology transfer as well as increases capacity building on recent eco-industrial innovations for all sectors. This corresponded to the national strategy on “Eco-Industrial Town”. Topics discussed in the seminar include (1) Transforming policies into actions, (2) Best practices and international case-studies, (3) Industrial environment management and AEC regulations, (4) Crisis management, (5) Innovations for low carbon society, (6) Innovations for zero industrial waste, (7) Symbiosis, and (8) Implementations for sustainable development of green industry.

 

 

B. Ongoing Low-Carbon Research Activities / Projects

Low CO2 School Network

“Low CO2 School Network” is a project implemented by the “Foundation of Environmental Education for Sustainable Develop (Thailand) or FEED”. It aims to create low carbon society by using environmental education process as a tool. Raising “awareness” and giving “knowledge” will lead to “attitude” change while increasing “skill” will leads to “participation” in environmental conservation and carbon footprint reduction. Activities are project based learning. Topics covered include (1) renewable energy, (2) energy efficiency, (3) shifting the energy paradigm, and (4) carbon capture and storage. The project targeted 11 schools in Samut Prakan province. The duration of this project is from April 2013 – March 2014.
