Thai-German Dialogue on the Green and Low Carbon Economy

(11 September 2013)

German experts on green energy and a low-carbon economy have held 2 days of talks with Thai counterparts in a bid to promote closer bilateral cooperation in the field, The Nation reports. Issues discussed in the meeting covered solar and wind energy, the private-sector role in waste management, and flood prevention. German team leader Karsten Sach, deputy director-general for European and international environment policy, said Germany was well equipped to assist and cooperate with Thailand in these areas. The event was held on 11-12 September 2013 at the Sukosol hotel, Bangkok.

Thai-German Workshop on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency

(13 September 2013)

Following the Thai-German Dialogue (above), Ministry of Energy (MoEN) and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) jointly organized a “Workshop on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency” on 13 September. The objective of the joint workshop was to strengthen the bilateral cooperation between Thailand and Germany in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency. It was the intention to address timely and  relevant  topics  of  the  Thai  and  German  discussion  of  the  transformation  of  energy  systems. Therefore,  the  focus  of  the  workshop  was  to  discuss  the  topics  of  developing  and  refining  a renewable  energy  law  (support  mechanisms)  as  well  as  the  topic  of  energy  efficiency  with representatives from government authorities, agencies, regulators as well as representatives of the business sector and project developers.

Department of Industrial Works (DIW) supports low carbon industry

(13 September 2013)

Department of Industrial Works (DIW) together with the Management System Certification Institute (MASCI) Thailand conducted a pilot program to boost “Low Carbon Industry” in the country. By using ISO 14064-1 as a tool and guidance, industries can estimate their greenhouse gas emission and plan their own emission reduction schemes or propose future suitable mitigation options systematically.

The program gave training, provided consultancy and conducted audits for the participating industries according to ISO 14064-1. There were 30 industries from 5 different categories (iron industry, petro-chemical industry, automotive industry, paper industry and textile industry) joined the program. Upon completion of this pilot program, instructors and representatives from participated industries organized a seminar to disseminate results and share their experiences on 13 September 2013, at Golden Tulip Sovereign hotel, Bangkok. Manual for greenhouse gas emission calculation for cooperates according to ISO 14064-1 was distributed for participants in the event.

ONEP organized the first Thailand’s Climate Change Adaption Expo

(26 September 2013)

The Office of National Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP), Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), organized a 3 days event – “Thailand’s Climate Change Adaption Expo” on 26 – 28 September 2013 at Central World Square, Bangkok. It aimed to promote and disseminate knowledge of public preparation for climate change adaptation as well as to raise all sectors’ awareness of the operations of the national and international offices/agencies working in the field of climate change. The expo also aimed to encourage entrepreneurs to develop new climate-change related products.

Awards from the Royal Thai Government called “Friend of Thailand’s Climate” were given to individuals, communities, and organizations with important contributions to the climate change mitigation and adaptation in Thailand. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific was awarded as a role model for formulating a climate change strategy and action plan. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) also received trophies recognizing their climate change adaptation initiatives. Other recipients of awards included Charoen Pokphand Group, Siam Cement Group, PTT, Central Pattana for best companies while Green Roof Foundation, Green World Association and Raks Thai Foundation for best foundations and associations.

B. Ongoing Low-Carbon Research Activities / Projects

Global Warming Forum 2013

Global warming forum (GWF) is organized by the “Good governance for Social Development and the Environment institute (GSEI) (http://www.gsei.or.th/home_th.php)” under a project named MEAs Think Tank (http://www.measwatch.org/page/4623). The forum is funded by The Thailand Research Fund (TRF). It is an open public forum for dissemination of works and knowledge synthesized from climate-change studies. Contents, presented in a series of academic findings and proposed policy on climate change mitigation and adaptation, are useful for both international negotiations and national implementation. Furthermore, the forum aims to encourage and raise awareness of all sectors to obtain, share and gain new knowledge from research studies and international dialogues. The project expects to increase participations and co-operations of all sectors in forming and implementing climate-change and other relevant policies.
