UK supports China and Indonesia to develop CCS

The UK’s Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey today announced £35 million funding to support Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) development in Asia with a focus on China and Indonesia.

The Secretary of State said in his speech at the Fudan Tyndall Centre in Shanghai that, ‘I am delighted to be able to formally announce £35 million of International Climate Fund support for Carbon Capture and Storage development in China and Indonesia. CCS is a critical ‘transformative’ technology to combat climate change. Through this support, we hope to help China in its efforts to move more quickly towards a low carbon future, and to accelerate the deployment of CCS worldwide. This is another major step forwards in the UK-China partnership on climate change’.

Ministry of Environmental Protection and the World Bank jointly held recently in China HCFCs (HCFC) production sector phase-out plan Implementation Meeting and International Ozone Layer Protection Day campaign. MEP Vice Minister Zhai Qing attended the launch meeting and delivered speeches.

Zhai Qing said that in order to ensure the achievement of the stated objectives, the Environmental Protection Department developed a system of sectoral phase-out plans to implement strategy, use policy measures, financial incentives and supervision of three work closely together and to focus on the following aspects work: First, the implementation of HCFC production, consumption, import and export total control and quota management system. Second is to optimize the implementation of the strategies, priorities close backward production capacity. Third, the rational use of grant funds to improve cost effectiveness. Fourth is to strengthen supervision and management to ensure that all policies and measures are implemented.
