Japan – Germany cooperation on GHG emissions reduction scenarios and long-term strategies
Germany and Japan signed the “Joint Statement on bilateral cooperation on the dissemination of low-carbon technologies towards transformation to decarbonised societies” in May 2016.They agreed to steadily engage in information exchange related to greenhouse gas emissions reduction scenarios and long-term strategies corresponding to the specific characteristics of each country.
The following bilateral cooperation has already begun.
The LCS-RNet 8th Annual Meeting was held in Wuppertal, Germany in September 2016, jointly sponsored by Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and the Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy (WI), with support from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ).
Under the theme of “How to trigger the long-term transformation towards full decarbonisation”, presentations and discussions featured good practices in both Germany and Japan, as well as reports on the respective low-carbon scenarios in Japan and Germany.
MOEJ invited Dr. Hans Joachim Schellnhuber of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany and Mr. Harald Neitzel of BMUB to Japan’s Long-term Low Carbon Vision subcommittee (7th meeting) in November 2016.
This subcommittee was established by MOEJ in order to examine not only technologies, but also a “long-term low-carbon vision” that takes reforms in lifestyles and economic and social systems into consideration.
In the meeting, Dr. Schellnhuber stated that climate change is almost certainly an anthropogenic phenomenon, while transition to decarbonisation has the potential to bring enormous economic opportunities. Mr. Neitzel gave an overview of Germany’s “Climate Action Plan 2050” and related to the Joint Statement mentioned above, he expressed expectations for future cooperation between Germany and Japan.
IGES developed a brochure on these activities.
