DENR to require sidewalks, bike lanes in all PH roads

Soon, all roads to be constructed in the Philippines must feature sidewalks and bike lanes.

This was the promise of Environment Secretary Ramon Paje in a statement issued on Thursday, November 27, during a Share the Road Movement event.

In his statement, Paje said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) had initially proposed a 4-meter sidewalk and 4-meter bike lane – at least half of road space – to be required “before an ECC (Environmental Compliance Certifice) is issued to any new road project.”

Philippine regulator clears templates for renewable energy supply contracts

Regulators have approved the payment and supply agreements that will govern the feed-in-tariff (FIT) system for renewable energy projects.

In a resolution, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) gave the green light for the template contracts that renewable energy developers would have to enter into with the National Transmission Corp (TransCo) and distribution utilities or electric cooperatives.

The two types of contracts are the renewable energy payment agreement (REPA) and the renewable energy supply agreement (RESA).

Ayala tech unit rethinks renewable energy tack

Electronics manufacturing services firm Integrated Micro-Electronics Inc. (IMI) is still interested in getting into the domestic renewable energy business, particularly solar energy, to ride on the government’s increasing focus on this energy source.

But IMI, a unit of the Ayala group, is reconsidering its existing investment in a renewable energy firm in Fremont, California, which is engaged in the mass production of solar panels.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled a new service designed to match buyers and sellers of low-carbon technologies to speed technology transfer to developing Asia.

“Asia is the tip of the spear as far as climate change impacts are concerned. We need to ensure a swifter flow of tested and up-and-coming low-carbon technologies to the region so that it can mitigate and adapt to the changing climate,” said Bindu N. Lohani, ADB Vice-President for Knowledge Management and Sustainable Development.

Renewable energy sector making strides, others slowing

The year of the Horse saw the renewable energy subsector gallop to many milestones while other subsectors lagged behind or ran in circles.

Without fanfare, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) earlier approved templates for the renewable energy payment agreement, or Repa, and the renewable energy supply agreement, or Resa, paving the way for the collection of the feed-in tariff (FIT) of P0.0406 per kilowatt-hour starting January 2015.

The Repa is between the state administrator of the FIT fund and the eligible plant operators while the Resa is between plant operators and distribution utilities outside the areas covered by the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).
