Mekong Delta: Sustainable development in the face of climate change

Date: 30/6/2014

At the conference, the issue of how to develop Mekong Delta sustainably in the context of climate change was given particular interest by experts. Indeed, unless an effective solution is found, the entire area, which is one of the world’s largest granaries, risks being submerged in the ocean.

Experts attending the conference spoke up about the score of challenges faced by the delta as a result of climate change.

A series of challenges: Drought and saltwater intrusion are becoming more serious; Upstream flood tends to increase, coming sooner and withdrawing later, thus leading to difficulties in drainage and flood control; Moreover, the exploitation and use of upstream water of the Mekong River have caused much impact on the water resource of Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta Plan comes as the result of close collaboration between the governments of Vietnam and the Netherlands. The plan will provide a long-term vision and suggestions for the safe and sustainable development of the Mekong Delta
