S. Korea extends support for renewable energy in Xayaboury

The Lao government has approved a project titled ‘Supporting Renewable Energy System and Training Programme for Energy SelfReliance Community’, to be implemented in Xayaboury province from April 2016 to April 2020. The project, with a total budget of US$742,000, is funded by the the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Energy Climate Policy Institute ECPI and the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), with ECPI to provide 20 percent and KOICA to contribute 80 percent.

The project directly targets about 15,000 students in limited energy villages or 15,000 people in rural areas, 8,000 students and teachers at technology-vocational and ethnic schools, and 12,000 students in Xayaboury province. The total number of direct beneficiaries is about 35,000 people

The project objectives to provide access to sustainable energy and to mitigate limited energy will be achieved by supporting renewable energy systems in public buildings. or villages in limited energy areas. In addition, action will be taken to limit climate change and its impacts and to promote inclusive and equitable energy education. This will be achieved by developing educational materials and programmes to boost understanding and management of renewable energy systems. It will also promote inclusive societies for sustainable development and build international solidarity to mitigate climate change by supporting Energy Selfreliance Communities (ESC), ESC Operating Committees and technicians to control renewable energy systems.

‘Green’ water treatment system planned for Vientiane

A new water treatment station based on natural processes will be built in Nahay village, Xaysettha district, Vientiane, using innovative methods pioneered in France. The treatment of dirty water using ‘green’ processes will not harm the environment or local communities, while the dregs that remain will be used as organic fertilizer.

The system uses reeds to cleanse the dirty water discharged by households and is the first project of its kind in Laos. Reeds will be planted in the reservoirs which would naturally cleanse the water when they were fully grown. The plant will be located on a 2.6 hectare site and has four reservoirs for the treatment of waste from household toilets. The reservoirs will be able to store 100,000 cubic metres of dirty water a year. The project has received a grant from France’s Association Internationale des Maires Francophones worth more than 578,000 euro.

Previous projects have proved successful in other countries, notably France. Vientiane Urban Development and Administration Authority (VUDAA) the project manager hopes to build more treatment plants in rural areas of Vientiane if the project in Nahay village proves successful.

World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Lao PDR has launched the Result of the Regional study on power Vision for 2050 for greater Mekong region especially for Lao PDR for 2050

On 19 May 2016, World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Lao PDR has launched the Result of the Regional study on power Vision for 2050 for greater Mekong region especially for Lao PDR for 2050. at Mercure Hotel, Vientiane Capital. all ministry’s line agencies and Academic Institute, INGos, NGOs media sector have been participated. The report delivered some message for power sector for Lao PDR by 2050 that

” Lao PDR has an opportunity to become a leader in clean renewable electricity. Renewable energy source such as sun, wind, water and Biomass energy abound on its territory”

The report also shows that another future is possible, where a more diverse mix of renewable sources can meet Lao’s electricity demand and export strategies by 2050, with 44.5% if the installed capacity met by sustainable renewable energy by 2025.
